Dot News: Random as ever Rest in Peace Katherine Dunham By Dot Benford Katherine Dunham (African American dancer and chorographer) died May 21st, 2006 in an assisted living facility in NY. Dunham best known for her work that brought African styles of dance to the lime lights of Broadway, Europe and beyond. There was no immediate cause of death but she was suffering of recurrent malaria and chronic hepatitis. Dunham born June 22, 1909 (Chicago, IL) was one of the first African American students at the University of Chicago where she earned her BA, MA, and PHD in anthropology. She later completed her research (on a Rosenwald Fellowship) on Brazilian and Caribbean dance; which was developed into a new academic discipline. Through her love of dance Dunham founded new first dance school in Chicago and later moved on to New York to found another dance school and touring company. The Katherine Dunham Troupe performed at least 100 different routines by Dunham and moved the world through dance. She once said that her troupes torso swirling performances were "called anthropology in New Haven, sex in Boston and in Romeart." Katherine Dunham was the creative force behind several well-known pieces including "Cabin in the Sky" (1940), which she helped choreograph with George Balanchine, "Tropical Revue" (1943), "Carib Song" (1945) and "Bal Negre" (1946). Dunham was one of the first African Americans to work for the Metropolitan Opera in New York where she directed the dances Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida." Not only was Katherine Dunham a star on stage she also was a star on earth working towards civil rights during a time where it was dangerous to speak out against the injustices against African Americans. Dunham designed dance performances to protest racial segregation one of which included "Southland" (1951), which was about lynchings in the South and included a black man swinging from a rope while a woman sang the anti-lynching song "Strange Fruit." Recently at the age of 82 Dunham undertook a 47 day hunger strike to improve Americans opinion of Haiti. Research for this article was used from the following sites: The Washington Post Newspaper here Bio of Ms Dunham here Feel free to visit them for more information. |
