MeSA Dance Crew @ Cultural Fest, Oct. 28 2004

Members of MeSA (Mexican Students de Aztlan), Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., and
SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) came together to perform a mix of cumbia and bachata.
These two genres are important to us because they reflect the migration and acculturation experienced by Latinos
in the Americas. Cumbia made its way throughout Latin America and various regions have adopted it and given it
their own style. Bachata on the other hand has been embraced by new generations of Latinos in United States
before spreading internationally. No matter where our families have come from the members of this dance team take
pride in creating a space for the interchange of Latino culture from all regions and keeping it alive not only in annual
performances but as part our daily lives and celebrations. The routine has been performed on two
occasions: At UICís Cultural Fest on October 28, 2004 and at UICís Latino Fest on November 10, 2004.
