History of AASIA
The history of Asian American Students in Alliance (AASIA) dates back to the late 1980's. Previously there had been individual ethnic Asian student groups like Japanese Club, but this was the first Pan-Asian American Student Group.
AASIA's roots began with the Organization of Asian Students (OAS) and this group split into another one known as Asian American Collegiate Organization (AACO) in the fall of 1991. AACO focused much more on political issue and empowerment while OAS provided social activities. By spring of 1994, students decided as a sign of unity, the two groups should be merged into a single organization which then became AASIA. AASIA has been instrumental in pushing for Asian American concerns and has been in support of the newly approved Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Asian Americans.
AASIA prides itself on being the starting point for many of UIC's Asian American leaders, many of which continue their UIC experience as employees who still remained connected and concerned about the group and the community. The strong foundation that has built will remain for years to come and we hope that you will join us in this tradition of strengthening and supporting this community and working toward our goals.
