Filipinos In Alliance was established at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1997 to bring together the increasing population of Filipino students. United as one voice, we can raise awareness and enrich our community with our Filipino culture. As we create an environment that builds bridges between social, generational, and cultural gaps, we challenge ourselves in terms of understanding our Filipino American heritage. We believe that being Filipino is not a requirement to be part of this organization, but that it is merely a commonality we can use to educate ourselves in the hope of erasing barriers we face.

Who Are You?

My name is Monique, and I'm a Biology major from Schaumburg. I like to hang out with friends, play the piano, and perform Filipino cultural dances.

What is your involment in FIA?

I'm pretty dedicated to FIA Cultural. I've danced for FIA since the beginning of my freshman year, and I've performed at two FACTs, Nite in Manila, Battle, and other events.

I hear you like to hit kids on the head during cultural practices to keep them in line - is that true?

Wait? What? Kristine, is that even a question? No! It's not true at all!

Kidding, Monique - Is there anything about you that FIA might not know?

I used to be in Tae Kwon Do, but most people don't suspect it because I'm kind of shy and quiet.

(I bet those kids that you hit during cultural practice don't think you're shy and quiet.)

KRISTINE!

Sorry, next: What would you like to see out of FIA this year?

I'm really looking forward to another modern / cultural collaboration. I had a lot of learning and performing the one from last year.

What is your favorite thing about FIA?

I really like meeting new people and being able to build really close friendships with them.

What is your most memorable FIA moment?

FACT 2008 -it was my first time going U of I with FIA, and I remember eating sonic twice in one weekend. It was delicious.
