The UIC campus is a open campus meaning its not marked by a fence at its boundaries. There are houses, apartments and shops inside the campus itself. Its in the heart of downtown and is split into two parts the east campus (engineering, liberal arts and sciences) and the west campus (medicine, nursing, pharmacy). There is also a south campus which has a big recreation center and dorms.
Both the campuses are well connected by shuttle services and are mostly self contained.
Try taking a virtual tour of the college here.
Two important places in the campus would be CCC and CIU. These are now renamed as SRC east and west. Almost all buildings here are referred to by abbreviations which you will get used to once you come here. For example SRC stands for Student Recreation Center. SRC has gyms/canteens/swimming pools/bowling/racquet-ball/basketball. A new recreation center is also coming up near SRC east.
Just to get familiarized with all the abbreviations we will be using those names in this page. You can refer to the campus map to understand what they mean.
Most engineering departments are located in ERF(mech/civil) and SEO(CS/ECE/EEE). LAS departments are either in BSB or UH and art/architecture depts in AA. There are lecture centers and various halls like stevenson hall/grant hall/douglas hall.. where classrooms are located. Most medical depts are in college of medicine which is a huge building and has big potential for GAs. There is a separate building for nursing, pharmacy, public health and applied health.
Computing@UIC is quite decent. We have 24 hour labs in BGRC and SEL and a lot of different labs around the campus. This is run by ACCC which is the dept to contact for getting your net id and enterprise id. Visit their websites for more info on computing policies and other stuff.
I-card is the photo identity card issued to everyone on campus. You need this for almost everything on campus from access to buildings after hours to checking out books in library.
Net id is an id that identifies you uniquely and states that you are or have been a part of UIC. In general your id is of the this form
<first alphabet of your first name><first 5 characters of your last name><a number>
for instance take Madhu Venkatesan's net id; it is mvenka2. and email address becomes mvenka2 @ uic . edu
Your enterprise id is the same as the net id. Only difference between the two is the password associated with them. You need this enterprise id to register for classes. It is quite simple and you will get what it is when you do it for the first time. No need to bother about this while in India. If you are a little geeky you could go over to the ACCC website and using your TCN you can get your Ids. If you screw something up don't worry about it as you can come here and get it fixed. The reason why we say this is when you email profs regarding RA/TA and apply for GAs/ internships, it's best to use your UIC id rather than some yahoo/gmail account.
If you look at the living section of the UIC website, you can gather a lot of information about other facilities available in UIC. In general we recommend that you spend some good time browsing through the UIC website and especially your departmental webpage to know more about the work people do. For a general perspective on a particular prof you could email the departmental contact we have specified.
As a rule of thumb think about what you are emailing to the group and think if you can find the information elsewhere.
