Shopping here is indeed a big thing and is usually done from super markets. Most people buy things online except for groceries and items of daily use. If you are about 4 or 5 people and have an access to a car it makes sense to buy a membership at warehouses such as costco or sams club. But if you are not going to be a big bunch of students there is jewel osco and dominicks right by the campus which most people go. There are a lot of shopping stores in chicago. There is of course the infamous walmart (20mins rides using the CTA train and one more coming up near downtown) and kmart (about 15 min by CTA). You can find absolutely anything and everything that you might expect in america. If you head towards the suburbs you find a lot of shopping malls like gurnee, NRS (about 15mins away), golf road malls where you find a lot of stores like gap, kohls for dresses and a whole bunch of other stores including dollar stores. Downtown chicago has every designer boutique worth his name. There are huge computer showrooms like best buy, circuit city, apple stores and what not.
One important place that has to be mentioned in devon. This is the place where you get indian groceries. You have restaurants like annapurna, tiffen, udupi palace, sizzle india, gareeb nawaz, where you get almost most different varieties on indian food. You get groceries all the way from rice and dal to small items like papads/applams to pan pasad candies. The suburbs have some nice restaurants too.
