Welcome to the official homepage of Russian "What?Where? When?" Club at
the University of Illinois at Chicago!
This is the official
mascot of our club - Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus.
The Owl is a symbol of wisdom, that was adopted by the TV show
"Chto?Gde?Kogda?" ("What?Where? When?") in the Soviet Union, which has,
since 1975, been one of the most popular shows. People from all over the
Union would send their questions to test the extent of general knowledge
and logical thinking of those chosen six omniscient people - a team, which
dared to answer any question, however tricky and obscure, in just 60
seconds. A spinning top
with a toy horse inside was a kind of roulette - the letters, surrounding
it, could contain a question of any level of difficulty, including the
"Blitz" - when 3 questions had to be answered in just 1 minute. All
depended on where the horse would stop. This game,
combining both excitement of gambling and intellectual quest with time,
attracted many people - many more that the TV-show format could
accomodate. So people started playing it, just as people played Trivia
and College Bowl - in tournaments, which included many teams, and this
movement has spread to many cities, in Russia, and abroad - and now, it is
played here.
Here is the information on the Club in UIC, as well as our
counterparts in other Universities in the United States, as well as on
Internet.
