Sinhala and Tamil New Year -- April 2005.

Although the conventional New Year is celebrated in January, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is marked by the entry of the Sun from the zodiacal sign of Pisces (the last sector) to Aries (the first sector) and is celebrated in April (usually on 13th or 14th of April) when the whole island grinds to a standstill to bathe in its tradition and heritage.

Traditional customs are observed at auspicious times determined by the astrologers. There are many events that take place in villages up and down the country. Family and community form the cornerstone through which the festival becomes meaningful and memorable. The celebrations continue for nearly a week.
