Global Cities—Thinking beyond New York.
This study comparing New York -- America's leading global city -- with the next 20 metro areas during the period 1997 to 1997 shows that the command and control of the global economy is becoming more diffuse rather than more concentrated. The implication is that cities, localities and countries are much more free than previously thought to pursue interventionist policies and regulations, and in some cases to do so to support integration into the global economy – in other words, public works, environmental policies and other such programs can actually enhance a community’s economic performance.

The New Daley Machine 1989-2003
with principal author Professor Dick Simpson and co-authors Kevin Navratil and Rebecca Raines. This paper compares the machine of current Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley with that of his father, Richard J. Daley. In particular, notes the contrast of the current Daley machine’s orientation with instruments of the global economy such as corporate law and producer services with Richard J. Daley’s patronage-based machine and its orientation towards downtown property development interests.
