Research / Discovery
Dr. Piano's research program is directed at understanding the mechanisms that underlie alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM). Dr. Piano's research uses a rodent animal model of ACM to study alcohol-induced changes in the heart. A major aim of Dr. Piano's research program is to examine pathophysiologic mechanisms that are involved in the initiation and progression of ACM. Her previous research has focused on activation of peptide and neurohormonal systems, and her current research is focused on mitochondrial injury and oxidative stress. She is also conducting studies with female rats to better understand the effects of estrogen and other sex-related factors in the progression of ACM. Other research efforts are concentrated in the area of heart failure. Dr. Piano specifically has an interest in examining interventions that improve physiologic and psychosocial outcomes in heart failure patients.

Teaching / Learning
Dr. Piano's primary teaching expertise and experience is in the area of physiology and cardiovascular nursing. Areas of physiology expertise include: signal transduction, smooth muscle, skeletal and cardiac muscle, and gastrointestinal physiology. Within the area of cardiovascular nursing, her areas of expertise include: heart failure, myocardial infarction, and alcoholic cardiomyopathy. Dr. Piano coordinates the graduate level physiology and pathophysiology class within the College of Nursing and also teaches within several of the nurse practitioner acute care/critical care classes.

Service / Practice
Dr. Piano is a nationally recognized leader in cardiovascular nursing. Dr. Piano serves on the Editorial Board of Circulation and Cardiovascular Toxicology , as well as several cardiovascular nursing journals such as Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and Progress in Cardiovascular Nursing . She has participated in the writing and publication of several Scientific Statements and Advisory Statements from the American Heart Association. Dr. Piano is a very active member of the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA). She currently serves on the Research Committee of HFSA and is the chair of the National AHA Cardiovascular Nursing Awards Committee.

Favorite past time: family and friends. When not at work, she can be found on either a soccer field or in attendance at her two sons' basketball games.
