M3 Year

M3 year is the first of two years of strictly clinical training. All students rotate through 6 core rotations, 1 basic specialty, and Essentials of Clinical Practice and Professionalism. The six core rotations include:
  • Internal Medicine (12 weeks) - ASN Internal Medicine Advice
  • Pediatrics (6 weeks) - ASN Pediatrics Advice
  • Family Medicine (6 weeks) - ASN Family Medicine Advice
  • Surgery (8 weeks) - ASN Surgery Advice
  • Psychiatry (6 weeks) - ASN Psychiatry Advice
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology (6 weeks) - ASN Obstetrics and Gynecology Advice

Here is a brief list of books many M3's find essential to their time on the wards:
  • - Maxwell Quick Medical Reference Guide

  • - Boards and Wards (Carlos Ayala and Brad Spellberg)

  • - Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia

  • - First Aid for the Wards (Tao Le and Vikhas Bhushan)

A significant number of M3's carry a Palm Pilot or Pocket PC with drug information (i.e. ePocrates), medical calculators, etc. Check out the UIC Health Sciences library website and look for the PDA symbol for free downloads. A free version of ePocrates can be downloaded at www.ePocrates.com.

There are many online references available for your M3 year. Since you are involved with patient care, you may be responsible for information that is not available in whatever textbook or review book you purchased. Below is a list of commonly used websites.
  • UIC Library Clinician Resources - tons of useful links to PDA resources, pubmed, MDConsult, etc.
  • University of Illinois Hospital - look under "Links" in the menu for many resources.
  • Up To Date Online - some hospitals have access to this (JBVA for example). An excellent resource.
  • National Guideline Clearinghouse
  • Medfools.com - this site contains several excellent scut sheets to help you on the floors. The Medicine Scutsheet is especially handy.
  • myHQ.com
