12/2006: Announcement of new Junior AΩA members.

12/1/2006: Applications for national AΩA awards.

2/2007: Election of 2007-08 AΩA Executive board.

4/18/2007: Annual Spring AΩA Banquet - Induction of new members, recognition of the AΩA clinical teaching awardees, and the 2007 AOA Alpha of Illinois Visiting Professor as keynote speaker. The banquet was held at the Millenium Knickerbocker Hotel in downtown Chicago this year and over 125 new inductees, faculty, residents, friends, family, and alumni attended the event.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Donald P. Francis from Global Solutions for Infectious Diseases, a non-profit organization dedicated to vaccine research to help prevent the spread of disease in less developed countries. Prior to this current appointment Dr. Francis worked on the eradication of smallpox, the Ebola virus, and the Hepatitis B vaccine while at the CDC. He is perhaps most renowned for his work at the Centers for Disease Control in the beginning of the HIV epidemic. He is featured in the book "And the Band Played On" by Randy Shilts which details the first few years of the HIV epidemic.

10/31/2005: Announcement of the first annual University of Illinois AΩA Resident/Fellow Teaching Award recipients for excellence in clinical instruction.

12/1/2005: Due date for University of Illinois AΩA award applications for the research, service, and faculty awards.

4/18/2006: The 2006 AΩA Spring Banquet was held at La Strada Top of the Plaza in Chicago with keynote speaker Raymond Damadian, M.D. from SUNY Downstate.

2004-05 Academic Year

6/8/2004—Chicago: AΩA members help out during a weekly call-in show for the American Cancer Society. This week’s topic will be “Cancer Treatment.” The show will be hosted by NBC 5’s Dr. Sandy Goldberg, Ph.D., with Northwestern University’s Dr. Raymond Bergan, M.D., as guest. See the activities page for more details. You can watch the show from 6:30–7:00 on Tuesdays, on Channel 21 (CAN-TV).

6/15/2004—Chicago: American Cancer Society’s weekly call-in show. This week’s topic will be “What’s Happening.” The show will be hosted by NBC 5’s Dr. Sandy Goldberg, Ph.D., with Larry Wert, NBC 5’s president and general manager, as guest.

6/22/2004—Chicago: American Cancer Society’s weekly call-in show. This week’s topic will be “Getting Help II.” The show will be hosted by Dr. Ernestine Hambrick, M.D., colorectal surgeon and founder and chairperson of the STOP Colon and Rectal Cancer Foundation. Her guest will be Dr. Claudia Fegan, M.D., of Michael Reese Hospital.

6/29/2004—Chicago: The last ACS call-in show of the season. The topic will be “Surviving Cancer,” hosted by Dr. Ernestine Hambrick, M.D. Dr. Sandy Goldberg, Ph.D., will be her guest.

7/17/2004—Rockford: We will be helping out at the Heartbeat 8K Run/Walk, from 7:30–10:30 a.m. Volunteers are not limited to AΩA members. Students (and family and friends) from UIC–Rockford who are interested in helping out, please contact AΩA’s Rockford representative, Jeff Cook.
