As part of UOP's strategy of global capacity expansion, we will be
establishing a satellite engineering design center in Houston.  The Houston
Design Center (HDC) will supplement our global design capabilities.

Houston was chosen for this new center to provide access to the largest pool
of Chemical Engineers with design experience in our industry and to expand
our presence in a market that is central to the petroleum and petrochemical
industries.  We anticipate that this Houston location, combined with the
opportunity to work for the industry's leading engineering technology
company, will greatly enhance our recruiting success within that population.

The location and design of the HDC facility is being finalized and will most
likely be an expansion of the current UOP site on the Northwest Freeway.
The doors should be open within the next three months.  We are also
launching a recruiting campaign this month in the Houston area to help us
achieve our hiring targets.  This campaign will include advertising and
special recruiting days.  We will be partnering with Spherion to target and
coordinate our efforts.

We will provide updates on the progress of this engineering design center.
It will take some time and effort to get the new office staffed and
functional and I ask for your support.  This center will not only give us a
great opportunity to tap into a talent pool, but will help us grow the UOP
business and provide support to our customers.

Tips for Finding Internships

Here are some of the ways students have learned about openings:

  1. The ChemE Department listserv. Karen in the ChemE department office periodically sends emails to students, including job openings and internship opportunities. If do not currently receive emails from her, stop by the department front office to get signed up.

  2. Sign up with the Engineering Internship and Co-op office http://www.uic.edu/depts/enga/co-op/guidelines.htm. They have a website were employers post job opportunities and students can apply online. You can set preferences to receive emails when new jobs are posted.

  3. Talk with your fellow students at AIChE events to find out about their experiences.

  4. Make sure you are on Engineering News, the College of Engineering (COE) listserv for students. You'll hear about COE events, job fairs, and internship opportunities. If you do not receive Engineering News emails, stop by the COE office to sign up.

A few of the companies that previously hired or are looking for interns from UIC

Andersen Corporation
Andersen began recruiting at UIC in 2006 through the Engineering Internship and Co-Op office (see note #2 above). They held an information session and on-campus interviews in early November. Andersen Corporation manufactures wood windows and patio doors, with production facilities in Bayport, North Branch and Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and Menomonie, Wisconsin. Interns can be placed in either a new product development engineering role or a manufacturing engineering role. Needs exist specifically for Mechanical, Industrial and Chemical Engineers. Contact engrjobs@uic.edu for more information.

Argonne National Laboratory
Argonne pursues research interests in a variety of fields, including chemical engineering. Their Chemical Engineering Division http://www.cmt.anl.gov/ researches fuel cells, lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, hydrogen production and storage, and nuclear fuel processing (see website for more details). Every year, they hire a number of interns through the DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships Program, http://www.dep.anl.gov/p_undergrad/summer.htm. Applications are generally due February 1. Argonne also hires co-ops for fall and spring semesters. Interns can expect to gain laboratory experience.

Dow Corning Corporation
Two students participated in Dow Corning's internship opportunity in Summer 2006. One was placed at a facility in Michigan and one in Kentucky. Dow attended the fall career fair and hired through UIC's internship program http://www.uic.edu/depts/enga/co-op/guidelines.htm and also advertised the positions through the department. Interviews were conducted in early October.

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IL EPA)
Governor's Environmental Corps (GEC) Summer Internship Program and the Pollution Prevention (P2) Internship Program http://www.epa.state.il.us/p2/internships/. In the GEC program, students work with an IL EPA officer, participating in work such as field visits and compliance review. In the P2 program, students are placed at a facility--anything from a water treatment facility to a pumpkin processing plant--and complete studies to improve energy efficiency and resource conservation.
Further information is available on their websites. Last year, the online application was due January 31. Mid February, the EPA gave a presentation at UIC for the P2 Program, followed by interviews for the positions. Students had to be registered with the internship office so they could register for the presentation and interviews. The IL EPA got back to the selected students in late March.

UOP
UOP has very strong ties with UIC, regularly hiring UIC students for internships and full-time positions. Students can apply for internships on the UOP website when the are posted (usually in March).
