CHICAGO P1 LIAISON PLATFORMS | ROCKFORD P1 LIAISON PLATFORMS

Chicago P1 Liaison Platforms

Stephanie Chang

Why would you be effective in this position?

I believe I have the leadership and communication skills to effectively be the P1 liaison of the class of 2015. As an undergraduate I was the president of Foreign Language Club. I conducted meetings with my executive board and organized conversation tables for over fifty members. I initiated a project to improve the matching of language partners by developing a program that would automatically match individuals based on their language of interest. My communication skills are good because I have had practice speaking to large groups. I am easy to get in touch with, either in person or through e-mail so I would be easily accessible to my classmates. I am very organized and will be able to keep track of all the information that needs to be relayed to the P1 class or vice versa.

I am very interested about pharmacy practice in hospitals and believe my enthusiasm will make me a very involved and dedicated member. I believe the ICHP's mission to support and advance the practice of pharmacy to achieve optimal patient outcomes is one I want to strive for and encourage my fellow classmates to do as well. By being the P1 liaison I hope to be part of ICHP's vision and empower my fellow classmates to be active members.

Goals/ Plans for office

My primary goal would be to make sure I communicate to my fellow P1 classmates all the upcoming opportunities ICHP has to offer and also be easy accessible to answer any questions or comments they may have for the ICHP eboard. I would e-mail my classmates about events a couple weeks in advance so they can mark it on their calendar and then send a reminder e-mail two days in advance so they wouldn't forget. I would also make sure my responsibilities to set up hospital visits and assist in the Residency 101 Program go smoothly. I would want to talk to the hospital staff taking beforehand to arrange a time for the visit, set up an itinerary, and establish a good relationship. For the Residency 101 program I would like to get as many P1's involved as possible since it is a great way for us to learn more about opportunities after graduation.

Why would you be effective in this position?

In order to be a liaison, I believe one needs to be patient and have good communication skills because a liaison is a position that links and connects with different people. I am a very patient individual. When I volunteered at the Burn Treatment Center in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one grouchy patient made other volunteers quit. But I assisted him for 6 months until he got discharged from the hospital. I survived his grouchiness, and my patience level has increased since then. With my high level of generosity toward another human being, I think I can be an effective liaison.

In terms of communication skills, my English has improved since I first came to the United States in 2002. I have to admit that I don’t speak perfect English since it’s not my native language. However, I can assure you that I can communicate effectively since I have excellent nonverbal skills that some of you may not have. You would be amazed with my nonverbal skills. With my excellent nonverbal skills and somewhat perfect English, I believe I can be an effective communicator.

Goals/ Plans for office

For me, a liaison is not a leader who walks in front of peers but more of a helper who walks with the peers. My goal as a liaison is to become a well- informed and responsible helper that my peers can trust and rely on throughout their years in pharmacy school. I will personally connect with my peer students, and hopefully this can help me in assisting them to match their interests with various opportunities available in ICHP. I believe we, each of us, will have different responsibilities and positions in the U.S. and global health care system as pharmacists. Our job as pharmacy students is to find our goals and roles as pharmacists. Honestly speaking, I currently can’t imagine what role I will be playing in this gigantic health care system as a pharmacist. One thing I can promise for sure is that I am more than willing to devote my time in learning more about pharmacy residency programs and put my effort in creating different opportunities that we can get involved as students through ICHP. I will be the helper and the helped (sometimes) to my peers in finding their goals as pharmacists.

Elizabeth (Liz) Gibble

Why would you be effective in this position?

I am a highly motivated and organized individual. During my undergraduate career I was president of the NIU Actuarial Club and the Lutheran Student Fellowship. The actuarial science major was new to the university my freshman year and, thus, the club was still in its initial stages when I served as secretary and then president. Therefore, there were few established events that the club provided and I was part of establishing the identity of the club. Through both organizations I have experience planning and executing a variety of events including alumni speakers, internship recruiting, community service, and social events. I feel this experience would make me an ideal candidate for the P1 Liaison position.

Goals/ Plans for office

To be successful in any career field including pharmacy it is important to build your professional skills in addition to your academic coursework. Therefore, I was very excited to hear about the variety of opportunities that ICHP provides students. Additionally, community service is very important to me and ICHP is involved in a significant number of initiatives. I would like to be a part of this club and feel my skills would be valuable in organizing professional and community service events for students. I hope to provide clear communication to the P1 class about opportunities through ICHP to help students grow in their professional skills and help with the continuation of previous ICHP initiatives and the creation of new opportunities for this year.

Mike Schmidt

Why would you be effective in this position?

I would be an effective P-1 Liaison because I have the leadership and communication skills necessary for the position. In undergrad, I held a few leadership roles in my fraternity where I would be involved in weekly executive board meetings and had to communicate information from the meetings to the entire chapter (approx. 120 members). I am easily accessible and always around, so it will be easy for any students to bring concerns or comments to me, which I may in turn bring to the attention of the executive board. Overall, I feel I would be a good voice and representative for the P-1 class, and to expand opportunities for my P-1 classmates.

Goals/ Plans for office

  • Increase P-1 involvement in ICHP
  • Set up interesting hospital visits
  • Increase P-1 exposure to pharmacy opportunities

Emma Carroll

Why would you be effective in this position?

I have a wealth of experience in leadership positions from college as well as my previous career. Moreover, currently I work as a pharmacy extern at UIC Medical Center. I can use my experience and professional network there to make the connection between ICHP and the COP as beneficial as possible for us students. I am a member of ICHP and hope to become a more active member through this position as P1 Liaison. My experiences as an advocate on various community organizations have prepared me to be an effective communicator between the P1 class and our ICHP chapter. For instance, recently I organized and participated in research and a symposium that brought together several experts and organizations around the problem of youth violence in Chicago that culminated in a book. During this community project I was responsible for communicating between organizations as well as city aldermen. I also was an active member of the honors organization as an undergraduate which focused on leadership training within the school and the Chicago community. I am extremely motivated and organized and would make a great advocate for our P1 class.

Goals/ Plans for office

  • To foster opportunities for professional and personal development for P1 students and to keep the class notified about these opportunities.
  • To use my experience and network at the UIC hospital to make our hospital visits and Residency 101 program as beneficial to you as possible.
  • To stay active in the ICHP chapter and to encourage other class members to get involved.
  • To organize social events for the P1 class that will be fun and most importantly, connect you to resources and opportunities offered by ICHP.
  • To set up and attend meetings* so that I can provide you with useful and detailed information.

* And ensure that there is amazing food at the meetings!

Stephanie Dwyer

Why would you be effective in this position?

I would be an excellent P1 Liason for ICHP because I have developed excellent communication and organizational skills during my time in college. I held leadership positions in every organization I was a member of, including President of the University of Illinois’ Irish Dance Company and Membership Chair of my sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Both of these positions required me to be in constant contact with many people and be extremely organized. I was responsible for making sure 50+ people were properly informed at a time and feel that I did an excellent job during the time I held those positions. Also, as someone who is very seriously considering residency after my time here at UIC, I really want to become an active member of this group. I plan to attend many of the conferences offered as well as partake in opportunities offered by the organization, such as hospital tours. I volunteered in a hospital pharmacy over the summer and really gained a lot of valuable experience that has really convinced me that a hospital pharmacy is where I want to work. I know that I can do an excellent job communicating with the Chicago campus and relaying the message back to my class in Rockford.

Goals/ Plans for office

As the ICHP P1 Liason for Rockford, my main goals will be to be a great representative of the P1 class here in Rockford as well as ensure excellent communication between my class and the organization. I will attend as many meetings and events as possible to further my knowledge of the group and bring back new ideas. I plan to be a very active and informed member of this group and feel that I have the skills and desire to do what it takes to be an excellent P1 Liason for Rockford.

Nadiyah Chaudhary

Why would you be effective in this position?

I would be effective in this position because I have a lot of experience in leadership roles. During my undergrad career I was an active member of many clubs including Pre-Pharmacy Club, Muslim Student Association, and Students for Justice in Palestine. Not only was I an active member, but I also held leadership positions. I was also a Volunteer Coordinator and House of Representatives Lead for the Pre-Pharmacy Club. I was the cofounder of the Pre-Optometry club as well as the Vice President. I also was a team leader for 2 years for Relay for Life at the Benedictine chapter as well a participant for 4 years. In these positions I set up many events for the clubs. I helped organize field trips, guest speakers, and volunteer opportunities for members. I also set up a bake sale to help raise money for flood victims in Pakistan. Besides school I have also worked since I was 16, and not just one job, but two.

This experience has helped me learn how to manage time and work with people, and handle stressful situations. I am easy to talk to and love working with others, so I feel that I am a strong candidate for this position.

Goals/ Plans for office

My goal for this position is to set up opportunities for Rockford students. I hope to help ensure that students at our campus have the same opportunities that Chicago students have, and feel they have the same experience. I also hope to help ICHP members with tasks they need assistance with. Personally, I would like to get involved as well as meet people!

Dustin Cavida

Why would you be effective in this position?

I would be effective in this position because I have had experience being on an executive board during my undergrad years. I was vice president of the Asian American Students in Alliance. Another leadership experience I had was being the head mentor at an afterschool science program where students would do small science experiments. Not only would my experiences as a leader be effective for this position but I believe my positive attitude, communication skills, and reliable nature would help me perform the roles as P1 liaison.

Goals/ Plans for office

My goal is to connect members and nonmembers by keeping them informed of future events. I hope to make connections that can help other members of ICHP build their contact networks.
