UIC BMES
Biomedical Engineering Society at UIC
The UIC chapter of the biomedical engineering society was created during the spring of 2001. It was formed to "promote the profession of biomedical engineering through...study, research, and discussion of the fields of biomedical engineering." The BMES helps to inform potential students of the possibilities that exist in bioengineering as well as assisting current students with their interests and studies.
Our chapter is always open to new members! In order to be eligible for membership, a student must be a UIC graduate or undergraduate student and be interested in the field of biomedical engineering. Students from such disciplines as biomedical engineering, pre-medicine/medicine, biology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and so forth are more than welcome to participate in any activities offered by the BMES.

Interested in joining? First, you should decide if you would like to be a Member or an Associate Member. Members join BMES via the National Society, and must pay an annual $25 service fee. Associate Members do not join through the National Society, and only pay a $5 annual due. However, Associate Members may not participate in committee/board elections, may not vote on official business matters, and may not utilize funds procured from the National Society, but may participate in any BMES activities.

Links to the different membership forms can be found below. Completed forms should be turned into the Bioengineering Office on the second floor of SEO for consideration.

National BMES
National Biomedical Engineering Society
The original Biomedical Engineering Society was initially founded in Illinois in 1968. The intent of the new organization was to "promote the increase of biomedical engineering knowledge and its utilization," and through the use of various awards and programs established by the society, it is making that goal a reality. The national society currently publishes the journal The Annals of Biomedical Engineering, and it holds annual conferences and lectures to further the progress of bioengineering. It also sponsors numerous student chapters of the society, like this one, in major universities throughout the United States. For more information about the national Biomedical Engineering Society, please check them out at www.bmes.org.
