Bioengineering Open Source Laboratory Program (OSLP)
Mission Statement
The mission of OSLP is to create a free and open laboratory environment for bioengineering undergraduates to practice laboratory skills, rehearse basic protocols, and collaborate on research ideas with others throughout their entire undergraduate tenure. OSLP aims to enhance and upgrade the bioengineering teaching laboratories at UIC, keep them open year-round, and offer free research supplies and training to any undergraduate interested in our mission.
ͦ The Bioengineering Department currently has 2 Teaching labs that are not in use 9 months out of the year (Mid-May – Mid-January)
- The Cell and Tissue Engineering Teaching Laboratory
- The Bioinstrumentation Teaching Laboratory
- Additionally there is a Bioengineering Fabrication Laboratory for students that is
open year round
ͦ The Bioengineering Organizational Alliance is in the process of maintaining and keeping these laboratories open when they are not in use for classes.
- Students can essentially design and run their own experiments with the advanced resources
available in the labs
ͦ We believe that this will allow students early in their careers (particularly undergraduates with little to no research experience) to:
- Easily gain fundamental research skills
- Practice basic experiments/techniques
- Brainstorm research ideas and perform them
ͦ OSLP aims to promote:
- Researching
- Creativity
- Networking
- Exploring
- Learning
ͦ There will be a detailed section on our website devoted to the OSLP
- Schedules of all open lab hours for each lab
- Detailed protocols of experiments and procedures
- An “Open Source” environment where students/faculty can post protocols and ideas
