New Life Volunteer Society
Director: Neha Goel UIC website and the national website New Life Volunteering Society (NLVS) is a volunteering organization that started at UIC several years ago. In October 2003, NLVS started running a Free Health Clinic on the north side of Chicago. The clinic runs every Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and we see an average of 25-30 patients each week. Volunteers for the clinic come from all the Chicago-area medical schools, including UIC, U of C, Rush, Northwestern, Loyola, and RFUMS. Junior and senior medical students work together to do the history and physical exam on patients, and then consult with attending physicians to form the final assessment and plan. If you're looking to get some early clinical experience, this is a great opportunity! NLVS also runs a Health Education Program in conjunction with the clinic. Students prepare presentations and brochures, and then consult patients on Diabetes, HTN, Nutrition, STDs, Domestic Violence, and several other topics. This is a great way to get involved with a different aspect of patient care. Students can also get involved in the NLVS Tutoring Program. This programs runs in conjunction with the Chicago Public School system. Each volunteer is paired up with a student from grades K-8, and they meet once a week for two hours in the College of Medicine. We hope to volunteer with you this year!! |
