  "Heparin: Unraveling the Mystery"

"After a distinguished career spanning more than 25 years at Baxter and 40 years in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ted Roseman, Global Head of R&D, Baxter Pharmaceuticals & Technologies (BPT), is retiring from Baxter.  One of his most recent critical roles has been his involvement in the heparin investigation, where he’s demonstrated his scientific and technical leadership within Baxter and across the industry.  Ted first learned of the vial-based heparin recall while in China supporting the development of Baxter’s Premix Center.  He returned to Round Lake and immediately began to help assemble a cross-functional team of scientists, manufacturing and quality experts. The team worked seven days a week, for months to identify and analyze the issue.  One of the first steps was for the Baxter scientists to take a step back and work as if “rediscovering” heparin, one of the oldest drugs still in widespread clinical use. From there, the team could establish an R&D “roadmap” or approach to determining root cause.  Under Ted’s leadership, the BPT R&D Team initiated its deeper dive into the issue and worked with Technology Resources, who developed new, advanced test protocols using nuclear magnetic resonance and capillary electrophoresis. This innovative testing methodology detected abnormal peaks in the heparin active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and crude material used to make heparin, and set a precedent as to how testing would be conducted in the future."

Dr. Ted Roseman received Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Michigan and a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from the University of Illinois.  He is also a registered pharmacist.  After finishing his Ph.D., he joined the research and development laboratories of The Upjohn Company where he focused on the rational design of drug delivery systems that resulted in the introduction of new products into the marketplace.  He was directly involved in the seminal work on the design of dosage forms for prostaglandins and controlled release delivery systems for steroids.  He progressed through the scientific ladder and has more than 50 publications and patents in the pharmaceutical field.   He joined the Baxter Healthcare Corporation as Director of Pharmaceutical Development.  Over time his responsibilities expanded, and he was appointed Vice President, Global R&D for the Baxter Pharmaceuticals and Technologies business. He led the overall development of new products through NDA submission. He has a distinguished record of scientific and service commitments to The Controlled Release Society (CRS).  He is a Past President of the Society and served as Scientific Secretary, Vice President, and President Elect.  He also was a co-chair person for two CRS annual symposia, is past Editor of the CRS Newsletter and is a recipient of the CRS Distinguished Service Award.  He is a fellow of the American Association for Pharmaceutical Sciences, and a past member of editorial boards of scientific journals.  He was an elected member to the USP Committee of Revision and served for 15 years on various standard setting committees.  In July of 2008, he retired and established Roseman Associates LLC for which he provides consulting and R&D Leadership services to the pharmaceutical industry.
