Recognition of Outstanding
Academic Achievement
The Undergraduate Winifred Geldard
Memorial Award is given in honor
of the late professor, Winifred Geldard,
who taught for many years in the Economics
Department. This award is given to an
outstanding junior or senior in the
Undergraduate Economics Program.
The Gilbert Bassett, Barry Chiswick,
Richard Kosobud, and Houston Stokes
Award was endowed by Evelina Tainer
to honor four faculty members who were
especially influential to her throughout
her studies at UIC. Evelina Tainer obtained
her bachelor's degree, as well as her
MA and PhD in Economics at UIC. This
award is given to either an undergraduate
economics major in the junior or senior
year, or to a student in the graduate
economics program.
The Sylvia L. Saffrin Award is
given in memory of Sylvia L. Saffrin,
who during her lifetime devoted time,
energy, and monetary resources to those
in need. This award is given to either
an undergraduate economics major in
the junior or senior year, or to a student
in the graduate economics program.
If you are a junior or a senior majoring
in economics, with an overall GPA (transfer
+ UIC) of 3.7 or higher, we encourage
you to apply for an academic award.
In evaluating the applications, the
committee pays attention to academic
achievements, the rigor of the courses
taken, and the level of involvement
in meaningful extracurricular activities.
All other factors being equal, preference
is given to students who plan to continue
their studies in economics at the graduate
level.
There is a common application form
for the three academic awards; the committee
will decide which award is given to
each successful applicant. Please note
that each year, the deadline is the
second Friday of February.

to the undergraduate Economics program
at UIC and its extra-curricular activities,
