Future Teachers Association Tutoring Programs
These are the current tutoring and mentoring programs the Future Teachers
Club is participating in.
North Lawndale Learning Community
The FTA has partnered with the North Lawndale Learning Community to recruit
paid tutors to work with students in grades 5-8 in Reading and Math. The
NLLC has over 300 students in 13 South Side schools in need of assistance
in these and other areas. Tutors will work with 2 students after school
from 2-3 days a week. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, contact
Gergana Gueorguieva, the FTA Tutoring
Coordinator.
Epworth Tutoring Program
The Epworth Tutoring Program helps elementary and high school students
with reading, writing, and arithmetic. On Mondays, 7-8:30 p.m., 20 to 25
adult volunteers help 25 to30 5th-8th graders with homework and basic skills.
Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m., 5-10 high school students come to study with 3-5
adults. On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, 3-5 p.m., 20-25 1st-4th grade
children come to Epworth Church to study with 10-15 volunteer adult tutors
and high school students. The Epworth Tutoring Program began in September
1985 as an outreach of Epworth Church in response to the high dropout rate
in the Chicago Public Schools. Most of the children in the Epworth Tutoring
Program attend or previously attended Goudy Elementary School and live
within 3 blocks of the church. For more information contact the Epworth
Tutoring Program at epworthtutoring@aol.com

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, the Office of Juvenile
Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and Chicago Public Schools are combining
their efforts for a School-Based Mentoring Program! This will be a wonderful
opportunity to develop a positive relationship and make a difference in
the life of a child, while gaining experience working in a Chicago Public
School. The program will take place at Emmet School, located at 5500 W.
Madison (corner of Madison and Central) on Wednesdays from 2:30/2:45 -
3:30/3:45. Only a 1 hour commitment per week! If you would like more information,
please contact Michelle Treguboff at 312-427-0637 x120 or e-mail: treguboff@bbbschgo.org
Gompers Junior High School in Joliet, IL is seeking volunteers to participate
in their online Language Arts tutoring program. 7th and 8th graders will
be working on writing asssignments and research papers and will e-mail
them to their tutor. The tutor will then e-mail the student back with feedback
and advice. Gompers is hoping to partner each of their students with a
UIC Future Teacher. This is a great opportunity for those students who
can't spare several hours a week for tutoring because of school and work
schedules.
If you would like to have your program listed here, or if you would
like to recruit UIC Future Teachers Association members, please contact
Amy Fehrman, our Tutoring Coordinator at futureteachers@uic.edu.
More programs are being developed. As we form new partnerships with
area organizations and schools information will be posted here and sent
out over our Listerv.
