The Chicago Graduate Student History Conference is organized annually by the history graduate students of University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in order to provide a comfortable but energetic venue for graduate students studying historical subjects to present their research. Convened around topics which encourage the participation of scholars from a variety of different interpretive perspectives and traditions, the Chicago Graduate Student History Conference has grown into a significant event that draws presenters from across the nation.

Founded by a group of four students in 2007, the conference is now operated by a large board graduate students and is supported and sponsored by the the UIC History Department, the Student Activities Fund, the History Graduate Society and the Graduate Student Council.

Archival information about previous conferences can be found here:

''Visions of Purpose: Belief, Ideology, and Historical Change''

The history graduate students of the University of Illinois at Chicago are pleased to announce the 3nd Annual Chicago Graduate Student History Conference to be held at UIC on Saturday April 10, 2010.

Religious, ideological, political, cultural, ethnic and scientific belief systems are often identified as motivators of historical change, inspiring actors in myriad ways. As historians approach various historical phenomena, the underlying belief systems of individuals, groups, nations and cultures present themselves as important players in the concrete actions that people take. How do beliefs drive political and social revolutions and movements, and when do they serve as the impetus for retrenchment and counter-revolution? What are the limitations of using ideologies as an explanation for historical action? Exploration of these systems can enrich our understanding of historical change and help us to present a richer and more nuanced view of the past. We seek to bring together scholars to consider and discuss the ways in which these processes take place, thereby furthering our understanding of the role of ideas in the past.

The keynote, "Running Away from the French Foreign Legion: The Affair of the Casablanca Deserters and Other Escapades of Army Defection", will be delivered by Suzanne Kaufman.

The ''[[Chicago Graduate Student History Conference]]'' is organized annually by the history graduate students of University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in order to provide a comfortable but energetic venue for graduate students studying historical subjects to present their research. Convened around topics which encourage the participation of scholars from a variety of different interpretive perspectives and traditions, the Chicago Graduate Student History Conference has grown into a significant event that draws presenters from across the nation.

This year's conference will be held on ''Saturday, April 10th'' at UIC's
Student Center East
and will feature papers from over 25 scholars. The topic for this conference is ''"[[Visions of Purpose: Belief, Ideology and Historical Change]]."''
