The UIC Pre-Law Society: A Student Organization
The UIC Pre-Law Society is a student-run organization that is open to
any UIC undergraduate student who has an interest in attending law
school or pursuing any law-related career. The organization is a forum
for students to learn about law, legal education, the practice of law,
and law-related coursework; to share their concerns and interests; and
to serve as a resource for each other.
The Society’s activities include the following:
- Arranging informational sessions offered by UIC faculty and
other speakers on many topics of interest to pre-law students,
including the Law School Admission Test and how to prepare for it;
the law school application process; how to write a personal
statement; careers in the law; what lawyers do; and others
- Sponsoring law-related campus speaking events
- A get-together at the annual Law School Forum in Chicago, where
representatives from the nation’s law schools make themselves
available to pre-law students
- Administering self-graded practice LSATs so that students can
identify their strengths and weaknesses and prepare effectively for
the real test
- The Society’s listserv,
prelaw@uic.edu, is used to distribute information and
announcements concerning a wide range of law-related activities
taking place at UIC and nearby, including:
- talks by scholars;
- undergraduate courses dealing with law and courts;
- pre-law events arranged by various organizations;
- free practice LSATs offered by test preparation services;
- scholarship and other financial aid opportunities;
- a mentoring program involving local attorneys.
- Outreach to new students at student orientation sessions
- Serving as a student liaison and resource to the
Pre-Law Advisor
in the College of Liberal Arts and Science, Adekemi Faleti
- Regular meetings at which information is distributed concerning
all the above, and members are able to share information and
concerns with each other.
The Pre-Law Society is run by students who are elected each year,
and receives funds and other support from UIC’s Undergraduate Student
Government. The Society’s faculty adviser is Professor Evan McKenzie,
who is also the Pre-Law Advisor for UIC Political Science Majors. To
join the Pre-Law Society, send an email to
mckenzie@uic.edu and request to
be added to the listserv. Any student member is able to post to the
listserv as well as receive messages
