Outreach with SWE UIC

The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Illinois at Chicago, SWE-UIC, strives to diversify the field of engineering and inform young ladies in K-12 grades about engineering fields. As an active organization on campus, SWE has progressively participated, coordinated, and executed various outreach events. SWE-UIC has reached out to various high schools around the Chicago-land area. Many of these outreach events include: student discussion panels, awareness and encouragement of engineering fields, hands-on STEM related activities, formal classroom talks, and volunteering.

Goals for Outreach

Our outreach strives to increase the society’s growth while broadening the members' participation. The outreach mission is to promote, increase, innovate, and empower more females to pursue STEM related fields. The ultimate goal is to effectively communicate, inform, and establish a long-lasting relationship with our community. STEM awareness is a crucial root in empowering women to pursue competitive, strong, and challenging fields in the sciences.

SWE Shadow Days

Given our dedication to outreach, SWE-UIC has initiated a NEW program, “SWE Shadow Days.” This program consists of inviting high school girls who have a desire, interest, or simply a curiosity in learning more about engineering. Upon completion of a request form to participate, the student will be matched with a SWE-UIC lady (college student at UIC) who will serve as a one day mentor. The student is to follow the college student’s class schedule. In other words, the high school student will have the opportunity to shadow the life of a female college engineer student for one day! Email: outreach.uic.swe@gmail.com with any questions.
