President’s Report

College Executive Committee Report Presented

Vice-President’s Report

CCIA—Christine Nelsen for Christine Pabin: CCIA’s most recent meeting spent significant time discussing the OB/Gyn procedures requirements for the rotation.

Extensive discussion regarding student evaluations and their fairness and utility between all 4 campuses was discussed. The UMSC agreed to submit a proposal to CCIA regarding student evaluations, critiquing the system and making suggestions on how best to improve the system for students.

CCSP—CCSP had its annual retreat in October. Much of the discussion centered around intervention strategies for “the weak student”, i.e. a student who has been passing exams, etc. by a narrow margin and finds themselves in some sort of academic trouble. CCSP is looking into methods in which the school can identify and intervene with these students before they get into academic difficulties. There was also discussion on the idea that the school is enabling students to continue failure by making it too easy to remediate failures.

After the discussion in CCIA regarding evaluations and grading lapses, combined with discussion of the weak student, it once again became glaringly obvious that the missions of CCIA and CCSP are intertwined. The UMSC decided to submit a joint proposal to the CCIA and CCSP looking at student performance with the goal to implement changes aimed at making the system more proactive in identifying and aiding students in distress as well as making grading and evaluation more useful to all students, regardless of the level of academic achievement.

CCA—More students eligible for admission this year, and the school made 40 offers as of  November 18. Currently there are 163 placeholders for the class of 2009 incl. GPPA students.

Peoria— awaiting report from site

Rockford—awaiting report from site

Old business—

Professionalism/Humanism task force—students are on task force and there is a meeting next week.

UMSC budget—as stated before, budget approved by school.

Decompressed tuition—report in process

Campuscare—some student discontent with length of time to get appointment and access to care from satellite sites. Platina Coy in charge of committee—her meeting with Dr. Grief rescheduled for Dec. 13. UMSC may then take over on behalf of Peoria, Rockford and Urbana; Chicago can decide if they want UMSC to handle it on their behalf

Future of UICOM—Looking to have more than one person attend CEC meetings; President and Vice-President or other member of executive board.

New business

In Chicago, now if you do evaluation, you may be in a new lottery system to pick which site they can go to for practicum and clerkship sites. Discussion ensued regarding student evaluations and whether this is a fair system to get student evaluations—some students feel that it is not fair and may pressure students into giving feedback they do not feel comfortable giving. Will discuss with CMSC executive board and see whether or not the administration approves of this and what the rationale is.
