IX.     Site Reports

a.      Chicago – CJ Glawe
·                            Match Day is 3/17 and the festivities will be held at the Harold Washington HHaroldn library. Graduation is May 6.
·                            Winter Ball was a success with great student turnout.  It was held at the MidAmerica Club in Chicago.  Funds raised through the silent auction  were donated to charity.
·                            CampusCare Committee is working with the Medical  (please see CampusCare report).
·                            We have started a leadership series.  We propose three seminars and one retreat per academic year.  Our seminar was a success.
·                            Dialogue with the Deans - we had a well attended dialogue regarding student resources and study areas.  The deans seemed receptive to our concerns.
·                            Academic Support Network (ASN) - Our first semester went well.  CMSC and AOA worked well together to produce a successful organization.  There were some glitches that needed to be worked out, but overall we had a good number of students volunteer for tutoring.  Most of the M1s and M2s utilized the services late into the semester.  We will be meeting with the Deans to further work out the remaining problems.

b. Peoria – Jeehun Kim
·                            The Peoria SGA hosted a "Welcome Back Celebration" for all students (M2-M4) on January 7, 2005 at Roxy's. It was a success not only in terms of the number of people who participated, but more importantly so because it was a totally non-academic social gathering that put all students from M2-M4 together and got students closer to each other. The Peoria SGA is planning to keep this kind a regular event.
·                            SGA Talk Series on Alternative Medicine - a panel consisting of two physicians, one chiropractor, and one licensed massage therapist gave an information talk on January 20th at 7:00 pm. Students, staff and faculty members had a good exposure in this topic and discussed potentials of "integrative medicine".
·                            The Snow Ball 2005 is coming up. It will be on Saturday 2/19 (the day that we have the Feb. 2005 UMSC meeting at Urbana) from 5:30pm to midnight. It has always been a pleasurable party for the Peoria faculty, students and residents, and is a good source of fundraising. This year, the Social Committee has added a free shuttle ride so that the participants don't need to worry about drinking under influence.
·                            The Peoria campus is considering an idea of making two call rooms available for visiting students. It'd be mainly available for the prospective students who will be coming to Peoria in the future, so that they don't have to spend money on other private accommodation.
·                            A panel of M4's will be putting together a nice talk and an electronic "student-to-student" guidebook on Away Rotations for junior students.  They are currently gathering away rotation summaries. Dates are TBA.

c. Rockford – Christine Nelsen
·                            We are delighted to have a nominee for the Humanism in Medicine Award - Dr. Glenn Netto. He is an alumnus of UICOM-Rockford.
·                            Pretty much the same thing is going on in Rockford.  We are still searching for an Assistant Dean.  The process should be finalized this spring.  Dean Lipsky is working hard on publicity for the College of Medicine.  He has been attending several community events.
·                            We have our formal coming up on February 25.  It should be a good time. It will be at Giovani's in Rockford.  Both students and faculty will be attending.
·                            Students are also anticipating Match Day.  Several students have already matched early.  Good luck to all the campuses on Match Day!

d. Urbana - Yogi Patel

·                     Auction held on February 7th 2005.  Over 50 items donated by faculty, students and local businesses.  Raised approximately $2400 gross.  Donating $500 to AmeriCares Tsunami Relief fund.  After accounting for the costs of setting up the event, profits were ~ $1400.

·                     Spring Formal date has been moved from Saturday April 23rd to Friday April 22nd due to conflicts with passover.

·                     Family Day (formerly Parents Day) has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday April 2nd 2005.

·                     The COM Research Symposium will be held on Friday April 23rd at the Hawthorn Suites in Champaign.

·                     Planning a social event with the Law School (ice-skating).

·                     Plans for a charity event for this semester are in the works.

e.      Medical Scholars Program Advisory Council - Bruce Geryk & Rudi Scharnweber

The past three MSPAC meetings were almost wholly concerned with the proposed changes to the M1 anatomy curriculum:

·                     lowering the MPL to 65% from 75%;

·                     making skills exams cumulative by semester (with the new 65% MPL) rather than requiring each exam to be passed individually;

·                     changing the structure of makeup exams (final cumulative makeup per semester rather than immediately region-specific makeups after each exam)

·                     separating the anatomy and embryology courses (already approved for the 2005-2006 AY)

MSPAC felt that these were too many changes to be implemented at once, and that the cumulative makeups were perhaps counterproductive to the stated goal of making anatomy less time-consuming, as well as concern about students who would do so well one two exams that they would not need to pass (or even take) a third one, thus leading to knowledge deficiency regarding that anatomical region.  The Educational Policy Committee heard these concerns but voted to pass the changes as presented, with the only possible amendment being in the timing of makeup exams to allow students more time to study after regular progress exams had ended.

X.      Old Business
a.      Professionalism / Humanism Task Force—guidelines and recommendations in place by the summer—will keep student representation at current level; will not increase at this time. Good student involvement from Rockford noted.
b.      UMSC Budget—budget situation stands as before
c.      Decompressed Tuition—report still pending,
d.      CampusCare Health Insurance— Ad-hoc report on Campus Care from Platina Coy discussed.  Recommendations and suggestions considered.  Formal response will be issued to the ad-hoc committee and Dr Grief for response within a faster time frame.

e.      Future of UICOM—Improving relationship with Deans Office, proposing a tour of all sites with UMSC Exec Board and Dean Flaherty.
f.        CCIA/CCSP Proposal—Work continues on shaping a proposal to revise the evaluation system for students and the intervention system for students who are not doing well. The proposal has been submitted to members of CCIA and CCSP for review and critique before final revision before submission to the committees.
g.        Student Evaluation Lottery—awaiting formal response from CMSC President Catherine Choi.

XI.     New Business
a.                          USMLE Step 2 CS Graduation Requirement—Issue discussed with Student Affairs at the four sites, discussed and considered by the College Executive Committee; a decision expected after CCIA Meeting first week of March.
b.                       Student Work Hours—Dipesh said that AAMC is working on recommendations regarding student work hours post-call etc.; also analyzing new data from the Harvard Sleep Study. At Rockford and Urbana it may be a problem, especially at Rockford where there are no residents and that students work alongside attendings and do not get out early. Problem in Peoria as well—students are staying after their residents leave and having to stay late into the afternoon evening without any kind of adequate sleep/rest.  UMSC will conduct its own review of this issue.
