Description of Health Education ProgramNew Life Volunteering Society (NLVS) invites you to join them in their mission to provide FREE HEALTH EDUCATION to the underserved urban community. New Life's health education program operates on two related levels within the underprivileged Chicago community: First NLVS has a student-run FREE HEALTH CLINIC on the North side of Chicago that is open every Saturday from 10am-2pm. With the collaboration of physicians, residents, and medical students from UIC, Northwestern, University of Chicago, Rush, and Chicago Medical School, the clinic provides free basic healthcare to the underprivileged and uninsured population living in the Chicago area. The free clinic offers services including physical examinations, lab tests, EKGs, x-rays, and medications for patients. In addition to this though, unlike many other free and insurance-based medical facilities, it provides PREVENTATIVE HEALTHCARE! Volunteers educate patients on an individual level about a variety of health topics based on the patient's interest or medical history. Second the HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM presents at facilities outside of the clinic one to two times a month. Volunteers from NLVS attend facilities throughout Chicago that are run by a myriad of organizations and educate interactively by presenting on one or more topics! These organizations range from shelters to rehab centers to schools and all are in great need of help. Health education includes topics such as Hypertension, Diabetes, Nutrition, Domestic Violence, STDs/AIDS, Hypercholesterolemia, and Substance Abuse. Some of these topics are used more frequently at the clinic while others of these are presented more outside of the clinic. Volunteers are expected to thoroughly research and become experts on their choice of health topic. By the time they educate a group or an individual patient, they will have a wealth of knowledge to accurately inform their patient/clients. GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO GET INVOLVED IN PREVENTATIVE HEALTHCARE!!! For the official Clinic website, click here. |
