The Phoenix Project is a unique national initiative to
empower young
people and
community through holistic self-development, leadership training and volunteer service. In 2005, a group of college students
came up with the idea that became the foundation of the Phoenix Project: use the energy and sense of purpose gained through training
in Yoga and Martial arts to empower youth and catalyze them to action for their own health and happiness, and to benefit the
community.
Every day during the project, phoenix project members engage in a rigorous process
of transformational education. This process occurs both through their service to the community, their dynamic interactions
with each other, and their powerful training in forms of yoga, martial arts, dance, and meditation. As
these young leaders begin to realize their potential, leaving transformed parks, community centers,
and lives in their wake, they come to learn what it means to be a Phoenix.
The vision of the Phoenix Project is to
be a model for anyone - from college students to CEOs alike -
of how to maximize the potential of our bodies and minds to find the energy to create the world we
seek.
So far, 128 Phoenixi graduated from 7 terms of the Phoenix Project. The Phoenix
Project is 12 days long and prepares participants to apply the skills and energy they gain through the program to continue as young
leaders to make a difference in their own communities upon their return.
Testimonials from Community Group Leaders:
Phoenix Project participation with City Year Chicago has had a positive impact on the morale and energy of our youth
service corps. At City Year we say, "Multiply the power of everything", and the Phoenix Project invovement in our weekly physical
training has enhanced the power and inspiration of this critical component of our organizational culture. --- Dan Yoder, Program
Director, City Year Chicago.
On behalf of ABCD and the youth exploration program we want to express our deep gratitude to the Phoenix project for
its support of our
program. Thanks to your effort over forty students were able to benefit from your breathing and stretching exercises. Your demonstration
was a great opportunity for the young people in the inner city to be exposed to new concept of mind and body training.
The Phoenix group was very knowledgably and energetic. The groups loved working with the youths and were willing to answer all of their
questions. It was a great experience to both our participants and staff; it will have a lasting and memorable effect on our youth.
The program was both timely and realistic. It presented an expansion of our outreach and service to the community. --- Gary
Prout, Action For Boston Community Development, Youth Exploration Program.
