March
8th, 2005:
UIC takes 5th out of 24 teams at
the 7th Annual Hawkeye Spring Classic. The team had a not so good
morning splitting with Eastern Illinois, Trinity Christian, and
UW-Whitewater, but beating each in points scored. The team then
needed to win its next pool of 4 because 3 went to silver with only the
winner advancing. The team stepped it up and went 5-1 in games
against Bradley, UW-Platteville, and Iowa Alumni. The next
morning we had to play #1 seeded UW-Oshkosh, one of the top teams in
the country. The team fell 25-18, 25-21 to finished tied for
5th. Next stop for the Flames will be the MIVA championships at
Ball State University.
February
18th, 2005:
UIC is ranked in the latest
National Division I Poll as an Honorable Mention! This is the first
time the team has been ranked since moving up to Division I this season
and into the MIVA's. With a full lineup intact for the rest of
the season the team looks forward to cracking the top 25!
November
22nd, 2004:
UIC takes 3rd out of 20
teams at their own UIC Fall Slam. The team fell to NIU in the
semi's, which was disappointing considering they beat them at their
Fall tournament at NIU.
November
6th, 2004:
UIC continues its winning ways with
a 3rd place finish out of 18 teams at the Northern Illinois Fall
Tournament. The team cruised by Northern Illinois, Ball State,
Iowa B, and Illinois B during pool play. This set up another match with
Ball State, the 3rd time this semester. The team didn't
disappoint, sending the Cardinals back to Muncie, IN. The team
then faced off against a stacked NIU Alumni team. Unfortunately,
the team ran out of gas and fell to the Alumni. Otherwise a good
showing, and hopefully the team can continue to finish strong at their
own UIC Fall Slam this Sunday, November 21 2004.
October
23-24, 2004:
UIC fared well at the
Hardwood Classic at Michigan State this weekend. The "A" team
finished in the Gold division tied for 9th out of 32 teams. The
team beat Purdue and Toledo and lost to Marquette to take 2nd in their
pool. This set up a challenge match with Ball State, which the
team won in 3 games. The team fell to Illinois in the opening
round of the gold bracket on Sunday. This is the highest finish
for UIC ever in this tournament. The UIC "B" team played very
well to
take 3rd in Division II, losing in the semifinals to Xavier in 3 games
going to the wire. The team rolled over Northwestern,
Cinncinnati, Wisconsin, and Michigan State's teams to finish 3rd.
A strong showing for both teams and hopefully an indicator of continued
success.
October
9th, 2004:
UIC went to Indiana
University for the Hoosier Fall Classic with two teams going to play in
the field of 20. UIC-A finished 2nd in the silver pool despite
playing in what was the hardest pool in the tournament. The team
opened the day with a loss to Ace Fire USAV, rebounded with a win over
Illinois B, and lost to Purdue A, giving them a 3-way tie in their
pool. Unfortunately things did not go our way as we had to play in the
silver bracket. The team then rolled by Purdue B, Wright State,
and Missouri B to set up a silver final with Illinois B. The team
came out flat and fell in 2 games, but still was a good first
tournament. UIC-B had a rough pool play with matches against
Dayton, Wright State, and Corn, but managed to find their groove
against Earlham, and bowed out with a tough 3 game match to IU-B.
Not too shabby for a group playing together for the first time. The
team heads to Champaign this weekend for the Illini 16.

tournaments as we can. Keep checking this website for more
updates.
April
8-10, 2004:
UIC Men's Volleyball
finishes 3rd in the nation out of 36 teams in Division I-AA! The team
went 6-3 over the whole tournament, losing only to the #1 and #2
finishers. The team opened up pool play on Thursday with wins over
Washington State and Southern Utah. UIC did not have much trouble with
either team and looked forward to the rest of the competition. The
final match of pool play UIC lost to eventual national champion Duke in
2 games. The next morning the team had to play a challenge match
against Bowling Green State to determine who went into the championship
pool. UIC blew BGSU out of the convention center to move into a
championship pool with Kentucky and SUNY-Buffalo. The team had little
trouble with Kentucky and then lost to Buffalo in a 3-game match. The
team finished 2nd in that pool to land them in the Gold Bracket and at
least a top 12 finish. On Saturday morning the team dispatched Weber
State in 2 games. The next match pitted UIC against Baylor University.
The team pushed through Baylors powerful hitting and serving with
strong defense and blocking to prevail 25-23, 26-24. UIC was only one
of 4 teams left. In the semi-finals, UIC was again to play
Buffalo, with the winner playing for the Championship. The team
came out slow and once again could not stop the Buffalo middle attack.
The team fell in 2 games, to finish 3rd in the country. This is a huge
leap for a program that finished 21st in Division II in 2003. UIC was
also honored with 4 All-American selctions. Dan Turner, a senior RSH,
received 1st Team All-American honors. Mike Stallone, a junior LSH,
received 2nd Team All-American honors. Brian Zielinski, a senior LSH,
and Ken Krawiec, a senior setter, received Honorable Mention
All-American honors. Congratulations to all of the team for a
successful season, and looking forward to next season for an even
better year! A special thanks goes to Colyn's iBook for helping
us get through the ride to and from Charlotte.
April 3rd, 2004:
UIC finished 3rd out of
11 teams at the MCVA tournament. The team had wins over Olivet
Nazarene, IIlinois-C twice, and lost in the semifinals to Augustana
College. The team would also like to note that while Olivet
Nazarene has a beautiful campus, it is also impossibly difficult to get
out of at the lunch break.
March 6-7,2004:
UIC goes 5-1-1 at the
University of Iowa Spring Classic and finishes 3rd out of 24 teams. The
team finished 2nd in pool play with wins over Bradley and
UW-Platteville II, and a split with #22 ranked UW-Oshkosh. The team
then won the next pool over a split with Iowa State, a win over NAIA
team Avila, and Marquette "III". The team then beat UW-Eau-Claire
handily. In the semi's, the team then fell to eventual tourney champs
UW-Oshkosh. Overall, it was a strong showing for the team.
