Urban and comparative politics. Foci include globalization and resistance to
globalization, local and regional politics and its continued importance in a globalized age,
measuring the performance of interventionist versus non-interventionist local and
regional government in the context of globalization and deregulation.
Co-author of “The New Daley Machine 1989-2003”, with principal author
Professor Dick Simpson and co-authors Kevin Navratil and Rebecca Raines. This paper
compares the machine of current Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley with that of his
father, Richard J. Daley. In particular, notes the contrast of the current Daley machine’s
orientation with instruments of the global economy such as corporate law and producer
services with Richard J. Daley’s patronage-based machine and its orientation towards
downtown property development interests.
